Accra, Nov. 28, GNA-All is set for this year's Nana Wereko Ampem Memorial Golf Championship scheduled for the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Friday, December 5.
Mr Kwabena Oteng-Aboagye, General Manager of the Achimota Golf Club, who announced this in Accra on Friday, said the one-day 18-Hole Medal Play competition, open to amateur golfers throughout the country, was in memory of 'Oyeeman' Nana Wereko Ampem the Second, former President of the Achimota Golf Club who passed away in the year 2005. He said the contributions of the late Nana Ampem, who was also the Gyasehene of Amanokrom and former Chancellor of the University of Ghana Legon, made the club what it is today. Mr Oteng-Aboagye described Nana Ampem as a renowned golfer whose exemplary leadership brought significant contributions to the club. "As an avid golfer, a memorial tournament was therefore instituted in his honour', he said.
About 150 golfers are expected to participate in the event, which is being sponsored by the Achimota Golf club and the families of Nana Ampem.
Mike Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club, would lead the Achimota team, which would include Robert Evans, Michael Aggrey, Geoff Fisher, Charles Tabi, Mike Ben-George and Paul List. There would be prizes for 'Nearest to the Pin on Hole 18' and the 'Longest Drive on Hole 17'.
