Owen and Florence excel at Nana Ampem Memorial Golf

Accra, Nov. 5, GNA - David Owen put up a splendid performance to beat a field of 120 golfers to emerge champion of the maiden Nana Wereko Ampem II Memorial Golf Championship played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday.

Playing with Handicap 16, Owen, a member of the Achimota Golf Club scored 37 points, after playing 17 Back and 20 Front to win on count-back against Sam Oberoi, R. Mukhi and Theophilus Gouvinus. Paul Owusu-Baah also beat Frank Adu and Geoff Fisher on count-back to place fifth after they all had scored 35 points with K.A. Baiden placing eighth with 32 points.

Florence Etwi Barimah won the Ladies category with 35 points followed by Beatrice Vetsche-Bempong at second position with 33 points when she beat Mary Asafo-Adjaye and Betty Allotey on count-back while Maria Bern-George took the fifth position with 30 points. The one-day 18-Hole Stable-ford competition was played to honour the late Oyeeman Nana Wereko Ampem II, former President of the Achimota Golf Club and the former Omanhene of Amanokrom who died in 2005. Mr Mike M. Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club commended families of the late Omanhene for their continued support of the sport and for sponsoring the event.

He said the contribution of the late Nana Wereko Ampem towards the development of the sport would go a long way to spur the members to aspire to greater heights. Mr Nortey Omaboe, a spokesman for the family of Nana Wereko Ampem gave the assurance that they would continue to sponsor the event for the ensuing years. He later presented a Golf Putter to the Club to be competed for annually.
