61,633 children to receive polio immunization in Tema Metropolis

Tema, March 27, GNA -- A total of 61,633 children under five years are to be immunized against the poliomyelitis disease in the second round of the national immunization exercise in the Tema Metropolis. Out of the figure, 33,072 children in three of the five sub-metros were immunized against the disease on Thursday when the three-day exercise for the second round started.

The three sub-metros are Tema Township, Tema Manhean and Appolonia. Mr Aguddey Sika-Nartey, Tema Metropolitan Disease Control Officer, told the GNA on Friday stating that the Metropolitan Health Directorate was yet to receive report from Kpone and Oyibi.

She said the children would only receive polio immunization during the ongoing exercise unlike the first round when vitamin 'A' supplements were also given.

Mr Sika-Nartey stated that no incident have been recorded since parents cooperated with the health officials and volunteers who visited homes and schools to administer the immunization. He called on parents whose children were yet to be immunized to ensure that they do so to avoid a possible paralysis of their children. A total number of 61,623 children under five years were immunized against the disease and 57,221 received vitamin 'A' supplements during the first round of the immunization exercise. 27 March 09
