Mr Prince Tamakloe Quarshie, Assemblyman for Pig Farm-Kotobabi Electoral Area, supported by Saint Thomas Eye Centre, has organised a two-day eye screening for community members.
The people were tested and provided with corrective eye glasses at a cost between GH¢2.00 to GH¢6.00, while the patients who needed special attention were referred to the centre for free surgery.
Mr Quarshie told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the eye screening exercise, which he had been organising annually, was part of his social responsibilities to ensure that the members of the community did not have problems with their eyes.
“This year, the eye screening has been very successful as about 250 people who have problems with their eyes patronised the exercise each day with a lot of them having their sights restored,” he said.
He encouraged the people to patronise such social services in their own interest.
Dr Elorm Tsawoe, an Ophthalmologist of the Saint Thomas Eye Centre, said the people were screened for cataract, glaucoma and other refractive errors.
He said the exercise was successful because many eye problems were corrected in addition to the health education that was given.
He said the Centre had been of immense help to many who could not afford the bills for their eye care in hospitals and expressed the hope that the cooperation between the Centre and the Assemblyman would continually grow stronger.
