Bleaching is dangerous to your health - Nurse warns

Mrs Juliana Amankwaah Mensah, a Public Health Nurse at the Kenyasi Health Directorate has cautioned the public, especially the youth, against bleaching of their skins, which could affect their kidney and lead to cancers.

She said bleaching has many health implications on the body and could cause death.

Mrs Mensah gave the caution at an Educational Career Fair jointly organised by Action Aid Ghana and Centre for Maternal and Community Empowerment (CMCE), for JHS students at Koforidua in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo Region, to encourage them to learn hard to achieve their future careers.

She observed that any hand or body lotion that could change the colour of the nail and the palm after use, could cause cancer and affect the kidney.

Mrs Mensah said people who bleach cannot be operated upon when the need arises since medical practitioners find it difficulty in stitching their skin.

She noted that there are many products on the market to deceive people that they could beautify their bodies by using them, but rather tend to affect their health adversely.

Mrs Mensah asked the students to be proud of their skins given by God which could withstand the sun.

Nana Adasa Nkrumah, District Director of Education, called on the students to study hard to achieve their purpose in life.

Mr Mohammed Salaam, Executive Director of CMCE expressed concern about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy in the area and advised girls to refrain from pre-marital sex, which could affect their education and future.
