Britannia Medical Centre (BMC), a non-profit hospital, located at Community 22, Tema in the Greater Accra Region, has marked its fifth anniversary with the unveiling of a cutting-edge emergency ward, reaffirming its commitment to providing accessible, compassionate and high-quality healthcare.

Since its establishment in 2020, BMC, with its vision to be one of the most respected private university teaching hospitals in Ghana, has remained dedicated to delivering compassionate medical services, leveraging technology to enhance efficiency.

During the unveiling ceremony on March 21, 2025, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Koby Appiah-Sakyi, emphasised the hospital’s mission to bridge gaps in emergency care, especially within the Tema communities.

"So, what we have done here is to develop an emergency unit which is up to standard, so that people in this community can access emergency services, if something happens to them, where they really need emergency care, so they don't have to travel a minimum of 10 to 200 miles to get healthcare...

"We have in this some emergency services that allow us to be able to provide respiratory support if you get a cardiac arrest, if you get stroke, if you have a road traffic accident, you can get healthcare, which is quite up to standard because the standard of care here is comparable to what you get in a lot of western countries," he noted.

The emergency ward, fitted with advanced monitoring systems and rapid response tools, is expected to ease the burden on the hospital’s existing infrastructure and enhance patient care.

The expansion aligns with BMC’s broader vision of integrating technology into healthcare delivery.

As Ghana’s only hospital to introduce a mobile app for seamless healthcare access, BMC is setting new standards in patient engagement.

The app allows clients to schedule appointments, access medical records, and consult doctors remotely, making healthcare more convenient and efficient.

Additionally, the hospital operates on the Yarysa Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, which interconnects departments to ensure timely data sharing and coordinated patient care.

Britannia has well established online healthcare services, allowing patients to use telemedicine on demand and also request for home services where needed. Many folks in the diaspora use these services for support loved ones at home

Beyond its technological advancements, BMC has been actively involved in community outreach programs, promoting preventive healthcare and community well-being. Through public health education campaigns and free screening exercises, BMC continues to extend its impact beyond hospital walls, reaching underserved populations with essential medical services.

The hospital’s leadership credits its growth to a strong culture of teamwork, trust, and continuous learning.

Looking ahead, BMC has ambitious plans to expand its services further. Over the next five years, the hospital aims to introduce specialised treatment units, enhance its telemedicine platform, and strengthen its role as a leader in healthcare.

"We have just completed an emergency service. In the next two years, we want to build a renal unit and then a maternity service. We also want to start a minimal access surgery service, which is keyhole surgery, very few people do keyhole surgery in this country.

"So, in five years time, the services that we are providing, which is general surgery, excellent maternity and gynaecological services, excellent urology services, excellent internal medicine, and emergency service, we'll get five more services" Dr Appiah-Sakyi stated.
