A public health nurse at La General Hospital in the Greater Accra region, Madam Evangelina Adjei, has advised women, both young and old, to seek early medical attention anytime they encounter pains during their menses.
She said this on “Ap?wmuden,” a program on Amansan Television (ATV) which is broadcast from Monday to Friday.
She was educating women on dysmenorrheal which is a sensational pain felt in the lower abdomen that can occur both before and during a woman’s menstrual period.
The pain, she explained, starts from dull, annoying and to severe and extreme.
She explained further that there were two types of pains – primary and secondary dysmenorrheal.
The primary dysmenorrheal, she said, occurs in the lower abdomen two days before one experiences her menses, and it lasts between two or four days.
And with the secondary dysmenorrheal, she said, these are cramping pains which are usually caused by medical problems such as uterine fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory diseases.
She mentioned some of the symptoms of menstrual cramp as nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness, headaches and diarrhea.
To this end, she advised women who often experience this kind of pain to see a specialist in female reproductive (Gynecologists).
