The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged Ghanaians to maintain a clean environment with the surge in cholera cases.

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, according to a citinewsroom.com report, called for WASH facilities to be made available in public places such as schools.

“Let’s ensure that we keep a sanitary environment around us. We wash our hands all the time as we were doing in COVID time.

“Schools must ensure that they have WASH facilities, and running water to wash their hands with soap, workplaces must have that, and marketplaces must do all the needful to ensure that a sanitary environment is important so that even if someone has it you don’t get it,” he added.

He made this statement after a visit to the Kasoa area for a stakeholder meeting on Monday, November 4, 2024.

Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye further emphasised that the GHS had developed an action plan aimed at both effectively treating current cases and preventing further spread, particularly from health facilities where infected individuals are being treated.

Reports by the health service indicated that there has been a sharp rise in recorded cholera cases in the Kasoa area. Five cases were initially recorded, but the number has climbed to 56.

According to the Ghana Health Service, 46 patients are currently on admission receiving treatment and are responding to treatment, while the death toll remains five as previously reported.

Cases concerning main Kasoa residents are 15, while the remaining cases are from Gomoa East and Ga South.

Dr. Kumah Aboagye said that there has been an improvement in the situation in Ada, where the outbreak started.

He advised all regional health departments to remain vigilant and implement preventive measures to contain the spread, while advising the public to maintain high standards of hygiene and sanitation.
