The African MCH Foundation an NGO has given the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) a 21-day ultimatum to rid the market of potentially harmful drug CIPROBIOTIC 250 or face legal action.
The drug which is imported into the country by Kojarch Pharma was banned in August 2015.
According to the FDA, the quality, efficacy and safety of the drug could not be guaranteed, hence, directing that Hospitals, clinics and pharmacies stocked with the drug immediately hand them over to the authority.
However, a recent market survey in the Greater Accra region carried out by the NGO shows that the drug is actively on the market.
Christian Mawusi Seyram, founder of African MCH Foundation said FDA must clear the drugs from the market or else the matter would be taken to a higher authority.
“We are all looking at the wrong things and we are doing nothing. What is alarming is that we purchased the drug at Kojach limited, we purchased it at one of their retail units so it means the importer still has the stock.
“The importer is still holding more stock to kill Ghanaians, infact I see it as a weapon of mass destruction,” Mr. Seyram said.
