Accra, March 23, GNA - The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has climaxed this year's World Tuberculosis Day with a football gala for inmates of the Nsawam Maximum Prisons last Saturday.
The gala which was organized at the premises of the Prisons by the Tuberculosis Control Programme featured six teams from the housing units of the Prison and was aimed at creating the necessary awareness of the disease amongst the inmates and for them to adopt preventive measures. World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated on March 24 every year throughout the world and theme for this year's is "I am stopping T.B." In the final match, Block Five and the Prison XI teams played to a barren draw but Block Five was adjudged the winner having won most of the matches.
The Prison XI featured the famous Aryee Aryeetey alias "Ataa Ayi", who was the favourtie of the fans as he was the pillar of the team warding off the efforts from the Block Five team. Block XI was presented with a glittering trophy and some gifts, while all the participating teams receiving a set of jersey each. Other participating teams were Block Two, Block Three, Block Four and the 'Lifers'.
Dr Hanson Nortey, Deputy Manager of the Tuberculosis Control Programme cautioned the inmates on the dangers of Tuberculosis and advised them to seek medical care whenever the symptoms showed. Kofi Kakraba Sagoe, Director of Operations and Security of the Nsawam Prisons commended the GHS for their kind gesture and pledged support in the eradication of "killer disease" in the prison.
