Stocks at the Korle-Bu Blood Bank have drastically dwindled.
A statement from the National Blood Transfusion Service signed by Public Relations Officer Stephen Addai-Baah said the fall in stock makes it imperative for more blood donations by the public.
“The current stock level stands at sixty-two (62) processed units of blood, against the daily requirement of two hundred (200) units of blood needed to serve the over 50 hospitals in the Accra catchment area”.
The Blood Transfusion Service the shortage arose from an “increased demand for blood during the Christmas holidays, putting unusual pressure on the stock levels”.
It noted that: “The Blood Bank has unfortunately been unable to meet some requests that have come in since Thursday morning due to unavailability of some blood groups”.
The Korle-Bu Blood bank is therefore appealing to individual voluntary donors, corporate organisations and institutions to help donate blood at the Centre to save the situation.
