Men who use marijuana can become infertile - Chief Psychiatrist

Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. Akwasi Osei has warned that consumption of cannabis is not only linked to mental disorders, but also a recipe for making men infertile.

According to him, this stems from the fact the sperm is weakened by the continuous consumption of marijuana making it impossible for men especially to produce quality sperm that can get women pregnant.

He revealed that there is a part of the human brain that functions by motivating the entire body to do well and excel, therefore in the usage of the cannabis plant, that part of the brain is attacked resulting in its retardation.

Recently, the acting Head of Education of the Narcotics Control Board, Ernestina Adjei revealed that Ghana has still been ranked as the leading user of Marijuana in Africa and third in the world according to latest United Nations (UN) reports on the use of the illicit drugs in the world.

She disclosed that the latest UN world report on drug use also revealed that about 22 percent of Ghanaians of School going age are engaged in drug abuse a situation she described as worrying.

Ernestina Adjei indicted that her organisation is however committed to fighting the menace of its debilitating effects on individuals and the nation.

Meanwhile, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has hinted it will embark on an outreach program for students and teachers in various educational institutions about the negative implications of the use illicit drugs.
