Two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have collaborated to organize a free health screening exercise for over 250 widows and the aged residents at La in the Greater Accra Region.
The organizations are the Cosmopolitan Aid Foundation and Menosack Widowhood.
Most of the beneficiaries were drawn from eight divisions of the Menosack Widowhood of the La community and they were attended by seven doctors and 12 nurses.
The seven hour exercise saw people being screened on health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes and malaria among others.
Dr Emmanuel Y. Voado, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cosmopolitan Aid Foundation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said during the exercise it became evident that many people have high blood pressure.
He said the early detection of health conditions entailed a better outcome and that organizations should be encouraged to organize regular health screening exercise for the public.
Dr Voado said most widows needed healthcare, but they found it difficult “to get money to satisfy their health needs,” adding that the best ways of mitigating their conditions was through free health screening events.
“It helps prevent health complications, save precious lives and alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable sections of society,” he said.
Mr Mensah Sackey, the Founder and Chief Executive of Menosack Widowhood also an assembly member of the La Dadekotopon, said the two NGOs decided to organize the screening exercise after observing the plight of widows in society.
He said the mission of the two NGOs are to break the chain of poverty among the less privileged and it is their intension to build vocational centres to train widows and physically challenged persons to acquire some useful vocation.
Mr Sackey called on well-meaning people to come on board to support Menosack Widowhood materially and financially to achieve its noble objective.
