Mr Julius Debrah, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development says the ministry would do whatever is possible to ensure the success of the National Sanitation Day campaign exercise.
This, he said would facilitate the achievement of the Clean Ghana Agenda set by Government.
He said the success of the exercise is the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians, adding: “With the support of Ghanaians the ministry has no excuse to fail in the exercise.”
Mr Debrah made the remarks when a six-member delegation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) led by the Executive Director, Mr Daniel Amlalo paid courtesy call on him at his office in Accra on Thursday.
He said the campaign entails the promotion of clean environment, good health and sanitation and with all Ghanaians on board and with the collaboration and support of Corporate Ghana and public institutions the exercise shall succeed.
Mr Debrah said the ministry has issued a directive to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to form Sanitation Management Committees to manage sanitation and maintain clean environment to achieve the Clean Ghana Agenda.
He said the ministry in collaboration with Fidelity Bank Ghana Limited would roll out Sanitation Business Modules which is aimed at building 20,000 commercial and household toilets and 20,00 Water facility services such as boreholes and other water services.
Mr Amlalo said the EPA would work together with the Ministry to make the sanitation day initiative successful.
He noted that although the initiative should have started earlier, protection of the environment is everybody’s responsibility and urged all Ghanaians to get involved.
Mr Amlalo said, for the initiative to be effective, it is important for the revival of structures at the grassroots level and to give the citizens the necessary backing to effectively manage sanitation.
He said the EPA had already started working with the ministry at the district level and would work together to expand the collaboration.
Mr Amlolo said waste could be turned into money by recycling, composting and turning faecal waste into biogas among other interventions and urged the ministry to explore such options in dealing with waste.
He presented to the minister some manuals on various aspects of sanitation and the environment which the EPA had developed for the protection of sanitation and environment.
