The Sunyani Regional Hospital in the Bono Region has indicated that it has been able to reduce maternal mortality by 50 per cent.

The revelation came to light during the 2019 annual performance review organised by management of the hospital on March 12, 2020, at the hospital’s training centre.

Addressing the gathering, the Bono Regional Medical Director, Dr E.K. Amponsah, indicated that it is important for the hospital to do yearly assessments as an unexamined life is not worth living.

Under the theme; “Fostering effective partnership for quality health delivery”, Dr Amponsah revealed that the theme was carefully selected in line with the hospital’s drive to strengthen collaboration with government, corporate institutions, well-meaning Ghanaians and non-governmental organisations.

He revealed that the Regional Hospital has been able to come this far in its efforts to provide quality health care as a result of the hard work of its staff and urged them to maintain the spirit.

According to him, despite the numerous challenges facing the hospital, the facility was still able to chalk a number of successes in the year under review.

He revealed that maternal mortality at the hospital which stood at 12 in 2018 was reduced to 6 in 2019; a feat he said is worth celebrating.

“Maternal Mortality has been reduced by 50%, disease surveillance mechanisms have been enhanced, we have also been able to improve our public image leading to improvement in OPD attendance”, Dr Amponsah revealed.

On the deadly Coronavirus, he urged the public to take hand hygiene seriously and avoid overcrowding as the virus is highly contagious.
