Two died of Rabies in Jomoro last year

Two people died of Rabies in the Jomoro District last year, when they were bitten by dogs invested with the disease, the Jomoro District Agriculture Officer, Mr Addae Buadu, has disclosed at Half Assini.

He made this disclosure during the launch of the 2014 Rabies Vaccination Exercise in the district at Half Assini.

According to him: a school boy from Half Assini and a woman from Bonyere, whose names were being withheld, died of the disease.

He said this has compelled the Ministry of Food and Agriculture district office to borrow money to carry out the exercise this year to prevent any death of human beings.

According to him pet owners are expected to pay a fee of three cedis per pet to the Officers to defray the cost of the vaccines.

He expressed regret that for the past two years, no vaccination exercise had taken place due to financial constraints.

Mr. Buadu said about 8,823 pets, made up of 6,200 dogs, 2,620 cats and three monkeys, are expected to be vaccinated this year.

The Jomoro District Coordinating Director, Mr. Abudu Amadu in an interview, told the Ghana News Agency that lack of funds had made it impossible to support the vaccination exercise the past few years.

He, however, expressed regret over the deaths of the two persons, and hoped that the Assembly would do well to support future exercises.
