Exchequers Beat Yobi Desert

Exchequers of Bank Of Ghana produced another gritty performance to beat Yobi Desert Rollers of Nigeria at the Africa Hockey championships in Pretoria South Africa.

The win was the third for the Ghanaians but could not secure them the silver medal that they are in line for. That puts them at par with Wanderers of South Africa who have a game in hand. Exchequers will now have to wait for Yobi?s game against Wanderers on Friday to know their fate in the group.

A win for Rollers throws the race to finish first in Group B widely open because all three teams will be on nine points in which case it will come down to goal difference.

Thursday?s game had the tense rivalry, which defines Ghana-Nigeria clashes written all over it. Desert Rollers had revenge on the minds after loosing out to the Ghanaian Central bankers at the last edition of the championships held in Ghana.

Exchequers huffed and puffed but found the defense of the Desert Rollers hard to break down until Joseph Appiah?s shot beat the goalkeeper of the Nigerians ensuring a win for the Ghanaians and increasing their points build up to nine.

Extinguishers of Fire service drew 1-1 with Mariam Buram of Nigeria. The Fire ladies led for most of the match but a loss of concentration coupled with sustained pressure from the Mariam Buram Ladies in the closing stages of the game denied the Ghanaians a victory. The Fire Extinguishers will now have to settle for a bronze medal.
