Pretoria, Oct. 3, GNA - The national women's hockey team was on Sunday held to a 1-1 draw by Nigeria in the ongoing Ninth African Hockey Cup of Nations at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa.
The Ghanaian ladies wasted several first half opportunities until Greta Aryeetey netted in the 38th minute to crown a a solo effort of Ramatu Abass.
Queen Anunwa equalised for Nigeria against the run of play as the Ghanaians were caught ball-watching. The lowest ebb of the game was to come in the 68th minute when Irish Umpire Julie Beamish denied the Ghanaians a perfect goal in the game they dominated.
Veteran striker Beatrice "Makhanaki" Darko scored perhaps one of the most delightful goals in the tournament from a penalty corner but it was strangely annulled by the umpire. No wonder, the lady umpire's decision was greeted with boos and jeers from the thin crowd.
In the other ladies game, South Africa demolished Namibia 9-0. The tournament continues on Tuesday with only the ladies events. Ghana play Namibia at 1030 GMT while South Africa clash with Nigeria at 1430 GMT.
