Wa, (U/W) June 25, GNA - The much anticipated soccer thriller by supporters of both Wa All Stars and Kumasi Asante Kotoko failed to come on as expected following a heavy downpour that rendered ball control impossible during the one touch Premier League match between the two sides at the Wa Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
It started to drizzle at about 2.57 pm before referee Nathaniel Plange ushered in the two teams into hostilities and just as spectators started to have a glimpse of the beauty of the game, it started to rain heavily to the displeasure of the supporters.
During the first minutes of play, it was evident that Kotoko were out to show their supremacy over the Wa lads while the homesters also indicated their determination to outclass Kotoko and win the match to safeguard their position on the league table.
All Stars came strongly with a powerful free kick from Kwabena Dodzie, but his effort was parried back into play for the defenders of Kotoko to clear to safety.
With the early threat, Kotoko took up the challenge and worked the ball into the goal area of All Stars and an attacker was brought down in the box but the referee signaled play to continue to the displeasure of the Kotoko players and supporters.
Kotoko nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Kwabena Yaro impeded the All Stars keeper but the resultant header from a colleague missed the post narrowly.
In the eight and 12 minutes, All Stars came close to scoring but shots directed at goal were palmed out by keeper Eric Nii Baah of Kotoko into play.
The match from then on turned into a fanfare with the spectators making boos, shouts and laughter as the players fell with the slightest push or attack as the turf was water logged making ball control difficult.
The condition of the pitch prompted referee Plange from Accra to call the two teams for consultation after which he brought proceedings to an end in the 35th minute. The match has thus been rescheduled for Thursday.
