Goals from Eric Bekoe and Jordan Opoku were enough to end Asante Kotoko’s astonishing 11-game unbeaten run at Berekum Chelsea on Sunday.
The hosts thoroughly dominated the first half of the game and deservedly went up 1-0 after 24 minutes through striker Eric Bekoe.
The 26-year-old who won the Premier League’s Goal King award in 2008 while with Kotoko delightfully placed his shot first time after being put through clean on goal by strike partner Latif Salifu.
It was Bekoe’s only second goal of the season which ironically came against the other most glamorous club in Ghana after opening his Premier League goal scoring account against Hearts of Oak in the Week 5 fixture.
The Blues went on to boss the remainder of the first half with the champions hardly getting a sniff at goal.
Their misery was however compounded four minutes to recess as another ex Asante Kotoko player Jordan Opoku ghosted his way in behind to a connect to a poor free kick to grab Chelsea’s second.
Defender Yaw Frimpong should take part of the blame for the second goal for failing to sense the simmering threat of the crafty midfielder.
The goal saw an immediate response from the Kotoko bench as coach Mas-Ud Dramani effected his first change on the stroke of halftime.
Striker Kofi Nti-Boakye however had very little time to affect the game before halftime after coming on for Nafiu Iddrissu who had been a mere passenger throughout the first half.
Kotoko however upped their game in the second and should have gotten a goal back 7 minutes into the second half.
But midfielder Issah Yakubu shockingly shot way over the bar from just 10 yards out.
That miss however spurred the Porcupine Warriors on as they impressively retained possession but were unable to create clean and clear goal scoring opportunities.
Kotoko then went one-man down when Kwaben Edusei was shown a second yellow card for a rash tackle on striker Eric Bekoe.
The champions despite their surge in the second half hardly threatened the home side who held on quiteimpressively for the vital home win.
