League On Hold

The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that all Week 5 Kinapharma Premier League matches have been postponed.

A statement issued by the Association and signed by Deputy General Secretary, Kweku Ampim-Darko stated that the Week Five matches have been rescheduled for Sunday, June 8.

The statement also confirmed that the mach involving Liberty Professionals and Real Tamale United scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday had been postponed to Thursday, June 5 because of the contribution of more than four players of Liberty Professionals to the national team, the Black Stars who are in Nigeria for the LG Four-nation tournament.

Giving the rationale for the postponement of the league the FA said by virtue of Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko's participation in continental assignments this weekend as well as the contribution of Liberty Professionals players to the Stars team in Nigeria over 50 per cent of matches would have remained outstanding.

Though the statement failed to mention the fact, another major reason for the postponement had to do with the inability of Okwawu United and Kpando Heart of Lions to honour their match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, May 31 because Hearts of Oak's opponents in the African Champions League match on Sunday, June 1, will be training at the Accra Sports Stadium at the same time Okwawu and Lions are to play their match.

The Soccer Express reported in its last issue that the PLB was contemplating the postponement of the league because of the number of matches that would have gone outstanding should the league have gone ahead on Sunday, June 1.

Though the statement was silent on when the Week Six matches that were slated for Sunday, June 8 would be played, PLB Chairman, Sylvester Mensah in an interview yesterday confirmed to the Soccer Express that those matches would be honoured on Wednesday, June 11. The League is expected to go on a three-week recess after the Week Six matches to allow for a series of matches involving the various national soccer teams.
