Kotoko sweat to draw against Power
Cape Coast, Sept. 10, GNA - An 88th-minute spot kick converted by Kotoko's arrowhead Nana Arhin Dua enabled the "red army" to pulled a last gasp 1-1 drawn game with Koforidua-based Power F/C in their 20th-week outstanding Kinapharma Premier League match at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday.Kotoko still maintain the top spot on 45 points, a point better than their bitterest rivals Accra Hearts of Oak while Power are stuck at the 11th position on 21 points.
Power took the lead in the 31st minute after dominating the early exchanges of the game. Kotoko goalie Louise Quainoo found Baba Yara's thunderbolt too hot to handle as he pushed the ball into his own net for Power's opener.
In order to consolidate their thin lead, Power pushed more men into midfield to quash the threatening moves by the Kotoko attackers, which operated round Charles Taylor, but that could not deter the determined league leaders from pressing for the equalizer. Coach Abdul Razak brought on reserve goalkeeper Mohammed Alhassan for Louise after recess as Kotoko re-launched incessant attacks especially during the last 10 minutes of the game, wining as many as 10 corners kicks.
It was during one of such attacks in the 83rd minute that hard-pressed defender Bernard Asare intentionally handled the ball in the penalty area for Sunyani-based class One referee J. H. Quarshie to award Kotoko with the spot and also showed the defender the red card. Arhin Dua converted the kick beautifully to the relief of the vociferous Kotoko fans who had thronged the stadium hours before kick off.
The match was declared outstanding because of the Kotoko-APR F/C of Rwanda Cup Winners Cup first leg quarterfinal clash at the Kumasi Sports Stadium last Sunday. Kotoko won the match 2-1.
King Faisal moved to the third position in the Kinapharma premiership ladder when they beat visiting Brong-Ahafo United 2-0 in their match at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
Faisal opened the scores in the 24th-minute when a B. A defender in an attempt to clear a dangerous ball from the goal area, rather, pushed it into his own net. Faisal, who dominated the game especially in the first half but squandered several opportunities until the 72nd-minute when Kwabena Boateng cleverly slotted in a cross from Abubakari Yahuza for the second goal. B. A United who played an impressive football, however, failed to make any serious incursion into Faisal's "danger zone" as their (Faisal) opponent proved too strong for them.
