Struggle for Premier Title Hottens Up

The race for the 2005 GT Premiership title remained wide open after title aspirants, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak and King Faisal recorded mixed results in their respective 20th week matches played yesterday.

King Faisal and Kotoko share the top spot with 37 points apiece, but Faisal leads on the strength of their goal aggregate.

Accra Hearts of Oak occupy the 3rd position with 36 points, having picked a point in their tension-packed match against Berekum Arsenals at the Golden City Park in Berekum.

Kotoko as well, only settled for a goalless draw with Ebusua Dwarfs at the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium in Cape Coast, while Alhaji Grunzah's King Faisal managed a 1-0 win over visiting Sekondi Hasaacas at the Baba Yara sports stadium in Kumasi.

The victory aided them to jump back to the top of the 16-club league table.

Faisal is seeking her first premiership league title, since joining the elite division in the mid-90s.

In Accra, visiting Bofoakwa Tano, threw away numerous goal-scoring chances they created in their match against Liberty Professionals yesterday, and only managed a goalless draw.

The visitors, led in attack by Yahaya Attah and Yaw Antwi, remained on the offensive for the greater part of the game, while the hosts relied on fast breaks and long ball pattern game.

In those adventures, Bofoakwa's attackers penetrated the defence of Liberty but failed to convert the chances that came their way, with Antwi and Sanda Mohammed being the worst culprits.

Within a blitz of eight minutes (15th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd), Bofoakwa had wasted four clear chances, which seemed easier to score than to miss.

Yaw Asante initiated a move in the middle in the 15th minute. He floated an intelligent volley to Yaw Antwi whose final chip over onrushing Kotei Blankson went wayward.

In the 21st minute, Kingsley Agyemang picked a ball on the left and moved deep into Liberty's territory, beating two defenders in the process and then delivered a low shot in front of goal, but Yaw Antwi's final touch was cleared off the line by David Addo, to the relief of Liberty fans.

Two minutes later, it was Yahaya Attah who had the opportunity to open the scoring but the striker's touch to Stephen Ofei's in-swinger missed narrowly.

Liberty had to play the last 50 minutes of the game with 10 men, after midfielder Daniel Yeboah was given the marching off orders by Mampong-based class one referee Alhassan Brobbey, for dangerous play on Yaw Asante.
