Known for its two competitive parliamentary candidates, Lydia Alhassan of the NPP and John Dumelo of the NDC, the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has been known as a hotspot for political activities in recent years.

And gradually, it is becoming notorious for being a place where some of the most violent incidents in Accra happen.

GhanaWeb takes a look at the two major times the constituency has trended for the wrong reasons.

Attack on Sam George:

In 2019, the Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam Nartey George, was assaulted by some security personnel believed to be members of the SWAT team of the Ghana Police Service during a contentious by-election in the constituency.

Sam George was slapped by one of the security personnel in a heated exchange after he allegedly shouted at them, accusing them of trying to kill a man in his house.

Another individual, suspected to be a member of the security personnel also punched the lawmaker.

The assault resulted in a fierce fight between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the security personnel.

The assault was linked to an altercation that happened at the La Bawaleshie polling station, where some individuals were allegedly shot by unknown gunmen.

A committee called the Emile Short Commission was set up to probe what led to the violence and the brutality that occurred during the by-election.

Some recommendations given in their report included payment of financial compensation to affected victims during the violence, a review of recruitment procedure of the police with appointments based on merit.

Attack on NPP office

On July 7, 2024, an attack on the Ayawaso West Wuogon NPP office by a group of individuals saw the destruction of properties, including two vehicles.

6 persons who were declared wanted by the police have so far been arrested for their various involvements with the attack.

They are all currently in police custody while other remaining suspects are still at large.

The incident happened on Sunday, July 7, 2024, with very scattered information on exactly what led to the violence.

The police are still investigating the matter.
