Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central, Ebenezer Akuoko-Frimpong, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to launch an investigation into the violent incidents during the 2020 general elections, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, including three minors.

Speaking on the matter in an interview on Oyerepa TV on August 14, 2024, Akuoko-Frimpong emphasized the importance of justice for the victims and stressed that failing to address the issue could tarnish the president’s legacy as the commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He urged the president to take action against those responsible.

“The president, as commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, must ensure that the perpetrators of these killings are brought to justice. Otherwise, it will be a blot on his record when he leaves office,” Akuoko-Frimpong said.

The DCE called on journalists and peace advocacy groups to apply pressure on the president to take action.

Akuoko-Frimpong expressed his personal discontent, stating that he would distance himself from the president if the issue remained unaddressed by the end of his term.

“It has been almost eight years since the 2020 elections, and eight people lost their lives as a result of the violence. This did not only happen in Techiman; it was coordinated across different areas. The president must provide a solution to this tragedy,” he said.

“I’m calling on him to act, or when his tenure ends and I meet him, I won’t even respond to his greetings.

“Even during Acheampong’s coup, no one died. JJ Rawlings’ coup in 71 people lost their lives, and during the 1981 coup, nobody died. But during a democratic election, eight people were shot dead, and yet, no action seems to have been taken.

“I will be disappointed, If the president doesn’t act soon, I’ll have no reason to greet him when I meet him after his tenure ends,” he added.
