What Do All These People See In Themselves?
As many as 27 people are jumping over themselves to replace Mr. J.A. Kufuor as President of Ghana in January, 2009. Of the 26 persons who are either self declared aspirants or persons who have been declared as aspirants by their supporters, only one is a woman. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) alone has many as 13 aspirants.
The NPP is followed closely by the Convention People?s Party (CPP) with five aspirants. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has four aspirants. The People?s National Convention (PNC) has two and the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) has one. So far there is only one aspirant who intends to go forward as an independent candidate. Those who will be competing for the Presidential slot in the CPP are Mr. George Aggudey, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, Professor Agyemang Badu Akosah, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom and Major Kojo Boakye Djan.
In the PNC it looks like a two-horse race between Dr. Edward Mahama and Professor Yakubu Saka. Although Professor John Evans Atta Mills is clearly the favourite candidate, three others have joined the race. They are Ekwow Spio Garbrah, Alhaji Iddrisu Mahama and Mr. John Mahama. NPP insiders say that the four frontliners in the race are Professor Frimpong-Boateng, Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo, Nana Akufo Addo and Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor.
The rest are Mr. Alan Kyeremanteng, Professor Mike Ocquaye, Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyemang, Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Madam Hawa Yakubu, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Mr. Boakye Agyarko and Dr. Arthur Kennedy. The GCPP?s sole candidate will be good old Dan Lartey.
Mr. Kofi Wayo is threatening to form his own party to launch himself unto the Presidential platform. As at now, the only person with the courage to step out as an independent presidential candidate is Ramon Akoto.
The big question is what do all these people see in themselves?
