The Alliance for Women in Media in Africa (AWMA) has celebrated Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, Vice President-elect for her historical feat as the first ever female elected to the high position of vice president in the history of Ghana.
Her election as Ghana’s first female Vice President-elect is a defining moment in the country’s political history and is a milestone achievement that marks a significant step forward for the recognition of women’s abilities as well as their representation in Ghana’s highest offices.
A statement signed by Madam Mercy Adjabeng, convener of the AWMA and copied to the GNA, noted that as a distinguished academic and former Minister of Education, her achievement shattered long-standing barriers that hindered women and inspired them to envision themselves in positions of power and influence.
“We celebrate Vice President-elect Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman’s dedication, perseverance, and leadership which have paved the way for future generations of women in public leadership, particularly in politics.”
The statement said her historical election endorsed the crucial need for women’s representation to ensure women’s voices were heard and their issues, fairly recognized and expressed hope that her expertise and experience would broaden perspectives, and increase creativity and innovation.
Prof Opoku-Agyeman’s election would diversify the pool of talents and competencies available and more importantly, provide a transformative impact of inclusive leadership to the country.
As a women’s media organization, the AWMA recognized the importance of amplifying women’s voices and promoting gender equality.
“We are convinced that her election will inspire more women to take on leadership roles and challenge the status quo to reflect her own words,” the statement reaffirmed.
Re-echoing the words of the Vice President-elect, “What really matters is not to be first to come through the Door, what matters is holding the door opened for those behind to enter” The AWMA has no doubts that the vice-president-elect would work tirelessly to promote the welfare and development of all Ghanaians, especially women.
The Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA) is a progressive, non-partisan, and non-governmental network based in Ghana, dedicated to empowering and networking women in media across the continent, advocating greater visibility and representation of women in media.
This is to help women attain positions of influence and power to contribute to an inclusive global ecosystem where the voices, stories, experiences, and images of African women in the media and African women and girls, in general, are correctly, sufficiently, and equally represented.
