Ahwoi Slams NPP

...for Backing out on Elective Process for DCEs

A former Local Government minister, Kwamena Ahwoi, has been taunting the ruling NPP government for backing down on its promise to elect District Chief executives.

The Election of DCE?s was one of the trump cards of the NPP when in opposition.

The party promised to change the status quo of imposing DCE?s on district administrative bodies by introducing a new system where they would be elected by the people.

In fact it was a key feature in their 1996 and 2000 manifestos.

But after being in government for four years and assessing the dynamics of local government politics, the NPP has abandoned idea.

The desire to back down was first made prominent in the party?s manifesto for the 2004 elections.

This change of direction, according to Kwamena Awhoi, is interesting because the ruling party thought the NDC was being fussy when it advised against the decision to choose DCE?s through the ballot box.

Mr. Ahwoi said the practice is not feasible because it would give an elected opposition DCE the chance to disrupt the programmes of a ruling government.

The NPP says it backed down on the idea because after been in government for the past four years, it has realized that the best way out on that is to maintain the status quo.
