Akwatia, Dec. 9, GNA - The 11 ballot boxes, which were seized from vandalized polling stations at Akwatia during last Sunday's elections, have been conveyed to Koforidua under police protection. The ballot boxes were initially kept at the Akwatia Police Station but were later transferred to Koforidua after Mr David Kanga, Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of operations visited the station.
Mr Kanga had earlier met the parliamentary candidates and their agents and informed them that the ballot boxes had to be moved to Koforidua after, which the EC would decide what to do. The Akwatia Police Station at the time of Mr Kanga's visit was being heavily guarded by the police rapid deployment force. Polls at five polling stations at Akwatia was disrupted by mobs, who succeeded in smashing two ballot boxes at a polling station, seized the other ballot boxes from different stations and destroyed election materials. The mob, however, abandoned the boxes after a chase.
