Amidu’s appointment a reward for campaigning for NPP – Kofi Adams

National Organizer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams, says he is not surprised with the appointment of Mr. Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.

Adams strongly believes that Amidu’s appointment is simply a reward for the intense campaign he did for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), then in opposition, prior to the 2016 general elections.

“Some feel that his comments prior to the 2016 elections favoured Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Worst case situations he spoke about in 2015 and 2016 also happened in 2017 under His Excellency Akufo-Addo which he did not comment on. Many felt he wasn’t there during the whole of 2017. The only time we heard from him was when something bad goes against the NDC. If it goes against the NPP, he doesn’t talk. So, I am not surprised that he has been given this appointment”, he noted.

Adams made this observation in an interview with Akwasi Nsiah on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Thursday. He was reacting to President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of a former Attorney-General, Mr. Amidu to the position of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. Mr. Amidu’s appointment is subject to the approval of Parliament.

Witch-hunting

He said even though many are of the opinion that the Office of the Special Prosecutor should not be used for witch-hunting, the President strategically selected Mr. Amidu to portray to the world that since he is coming from a different political party, he will be fair in his dealings.

However, in the view of Adams, he strongly believes that Mr. Amidu will be doing the bidding of the NPP.

“They intentionally decided to pick someone [Amidu] who is not part of them but who is going to do their bidding for them even worse than someone who is part of them. So, we will wait and see what happens”, he stressed.

NDC not afraid

Asked whether the NDC is afraid with Mr. Amidu’s appointment, Adams retorted “his appointment has not created panic for the NDC. All that he is going to do he has said in public.

“He even lied against his the party [NDC]. He was summoned before the Disciplinary Committee to answer to that issue but he didn’t honour the invitation. He later wrote to the party and if you read the content carefully, he meant that he had long parted ways with the party [NDC] and so there was no need to have invited him. Members of the NPP should rather be worried with his appointment”.
