A leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Amoako-Tuffuor, has endorsed the candidature of Yaw Buaben Asamoa, an aspirant in the party’s general secretary race.
The endorsement by the former Executive Chairman of the Ghana School Feeding Programme under the erstwhile Kufuor administration was made on Adom FM’s morning show on Tuesday.
Dr Amoako Tuffuor said most delegates, as well as party members, preferred Mr Buaben Asamoa to lead the party as the next General Secretary.
“Everyone has their choice. It doesn’t mean the other contestants are useless. Not at all. I did a critical evaluation devoid of interference. I have my personal choice. Everyone does too. But all that aside, I know very well that if the party should elect Buaben Asamoa, it will go a really long way to help its fortunes in the upcoming general elections. It will go very well for all of us,” he stated.
According to Dr Amoako-Tuffour, his conclusion on the likely victors of the General Secretary, Chairmanship and Youth Organizer races were made by a thorough observation and qualified information from delegates across the country.
He proceeded to task the host, Captain Smart, to ask him of his preference in about two weeks to see if he would feed him with a different answer.
As the delegates congress draws nearer, the astute lawyer’s candidature has drawn a number of notable endorsement confirming him as the right man at the right time for the job of chief scribe of the party.
The anti-corruption crusader received his first open endorsement from Daniel Dugan, a former deputy minister in the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration.
Mr Dugan stated that ‘YB’, as Buaben Asamoa is widely known, is akin to ‘a messiah.’ He placed YB on a higher pedestal in comparison with the other competitors.
According to the New Statesman, whilst touring the Volta Region visiting delegates in all the constituencies, YB received an overwhelming and confident endorsement from the leadership of TESCON and other youth activists of the party constituting the Patriotic Youth Forum.
YB says the NPP, going into its National Executive Committee elections come April 12, has a huge responsibility to Ghanaians. According to him, Ghanaians, including those who voted for NDC, want the government out because President Mahama and his functionaries have shown that they are clueless about managing the country and are only concerned about making life better for themselves and their cronies.
The NPP cannot fail them, YB stresses, adding that the party needs to present a united front and be prepared to protect the votes of the electorate at the polling station level.
He also insists on the need to elect vibrant, effective, strategic and truthful leaders to aid the party to win the 2016 general elections at all legitimate costs.
YB says he will be a reputable General Secretary who can gather all the other executives to rally behind a competent flag bearer; and a General Secretary who is not tainted by perceived factionalism within the party.
This is the second time the legal practitioner and a communicator of the NPP is making attempt at the General Secretary position of the party, after his first bid in 2009.
Before that, YB served as Spokesperson to the late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
The aspirant believes he has worked a lot for the party and gained considerable experience to be considered for the general secretary position.
His core message to the party delegates is “unity to protect the ballots” so that there will be no need to go to the Supreme Court again to challenge results as it happened after the 2012 general elections.
Mr Buaben Asamoa was the initiator and co-founder of Ghana Integrity Initiative and Ghana Anti-corruption Coalition, and also served as consultant to the National Governance Programme in the Office of the President.
He was a convener of the Danquah/Busia Club on Legon Campus, became the first secretary of the NPP on Legon Campus, and was a youth representative on the inter-party Joint Action Committee formed after the 1992 general elections.
