Anger on social media over NAPO's 'your Kwame Nkrumah' comment highlighting Akufo-Addo's achievements

NAPO is NPP’s running mate

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has come under intense criticism on social media following a controversial comment he made about Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling in the Ashanti Region on July 9, 2024, NAPO asserted that the NPP government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had outperformed all previous administrations in Ghana's history, including that of Kwame Nkrumah.

"It has never happened in the history of Ghana. If President Akufo-Addo retires, I can hit my chest and state that since the nation's inception in 1957, there has not been a president who has helped the state more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

"I am saying that from 1957 to now, whether you pick 'your' Kwame Nkrumah... there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo," he said.

This statement has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many users expressing their displeasure and viewing it as disrespectful to Kwame Nkrumah's legacy.

One user remarked, "Such a disrespect 'your Kwame Nkrumah," while another urged, "Whether you're NPP or NDC, do not be swayed by anybody to ever look down on Kwame Nkrumah; he built Ghana and Africa NOBODY measures up to him!"

"I can't believe someone of Napo's calibre will say this. This is a total disrespect to what our forefathers did for us. What Nkrumah did in his first two years under the first republic is greater than what NPP has done this whole term."

Another user challenged NAPO and the NPP to compare their accomplishments with Nkrumah's, saying, "The list below are Kwame Nkrumah's achievements in 6 years in government. I dare NAPO and the NPP to list its accomplishments in 8 years of governance. Waiting for a response…"

Critics also recalled previous instances where Dr. Prempeh made similar statements, pointing to a pattern of what they perceive as arrogance.

"This is not the first time NAPO has made that reckless, ignorant, and arrogance-induced statement about 'your' Kwame Nkrumah. Don't forget that too," one user noted.

"Let's start counting and keeping tabs on the immature gaffes and display of the arrogance Otumfuor said is not there. Cheers," one tweet read, while another commented, "He cannot conceal his arrogance. Even on the day of his unveiling, he demonstrates that. Such uncouth character."
