There is currently tension brewing in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region this time within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) following a resolution by the Regional Executive Committee of the party to impose the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alidu Seidu as a parliamentary candidate.

According to notice of a resolution signed by the Regional Secretary Sam Pyne and sighted by MyNewsGh.com, the decision was arrived at on Monday, July 29, 2019, at the Regional Executive Committee meeting.

He disclosed that after thorough and exhaustive deliberations, the committee have unanimously declared that, the three(3) Orphan Constituencies in the region shall sponsor the candidatures of Hon. Alidu Seidu, MCE- Asokore Mampong, Hon. Salisu Bamba, MCE – Ejura Sekyeredumasi and Hon. Joseph Owusu, DCE – Sekyere Afram Plains as sole candidates for the Asawase, Ejura Sekyeredumasi and Sekyere Afram Plains respectively.

“This action is in line with the party’s strategy to annex these three (3) constituencies. The party is resolved to make sure that, all other actions are in tune with Article 12,(I) of the party’s constitution and all party members are enjoined to abide by this resolution. Party members who flout this directive shall be sanctioned according to the rules and regulations of the party’s constitution”, he said.

But residents have angrily reacted to the move threatening to do the unthinkable if the party fails to open the constituency up for contest.

According to some youth groups, the Regional Executive Committee of the party cannot determine who represents them as their parliamentary candidate ahead of the 2020 polls insisting it is out of place to make such a decision.

“Do not dare make such a move because we are prepared to resist it with all our blood. Open the constituency up for a contest and then we will determine who we want as our candidate”, a constituency executive told MyNewsGh.com.
