The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged the President of Ghana to assure the people of Ghana of his commitment to handing over a peaceful country.

According to him, he has heard the President say on New Patriotic Party platforms that he will not hand over power to the former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

However, the President should speak in his capacity as the President of the country and ensure that he assures the people of Ghana of a peaceful election.

To him, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should make Ghanaians aware that no shred of blood will be spilled in the 2024 elections.

“I’m not going to address you, my address is going straight to the presidency and the occupant, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. You all remember that eight years ago this country the NDC and John Dramani Mahama handed over to you a peaceful country in one piece. We are heading towards a crucial election, you are wearing two caps. You are a leader of a party going into the contest. But most importantly, you are the leader of the country so even if your heart desires you need to ensure that there is a peaceful election and a smooth transition without blood being shed.

"We have heard your message on NPP platforms, you’re delivering as the leader of the NPP. We are yet to hear from you Mr President committing yourself to a peaceful, fair and transparent election in Ghana and committing yourself to respect the wishes of Ghanaians and putting yourself in readiness to hand over power peacefully to whoever is chosen by the good people of the republic. President Rawlings declared his intentions to handover power to whoever wins one clear year before the elections.

"President Atta Mills did the same, President Kufour did the same, President Mahama did the same. We are ready to hear what you’ll say. What you have said already that you will not handover until you are handing over to your party’s candidate we consider it as platform talk. Come out and speak as the father of the nation. You must set the tone for this election.

"If the election is going to be peaceful it must begin from the mouth of you Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. If the election is not going to be peaceful, you want to destroy the bridge once you’ve crossed to an Island let it come from your mouth on a presidential platform,” he said.

He called on the President to call his appointees to order to prevent them from abusing the power that has been entrusted in them to pursue their political interest.
