Koforidua, June 14, GNA- The Eastern Regional branch of the "Atta-Mills Forever Group" (AMFG), a group campaigning for the nomination of Professor John Evans Atta Mills as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) for the 2008 elections has said Prof. Atta Mills was not disturbed by the entry
of other contestants for the NDC presidential candidature. The chairman of the group, Alhaji Aminu Donkor Mohammed, who was speaking at a press conference at Koforidua on Tuesday, explained that, Prof. Atta Mills "is a democrat who welcomes political competition." Alhaji Aminu-Donkor explained that Prof. Atta Mills was contesting for the presidential candidature of the NDC not because "he wants to merely become a President but because he wants to deliver Ghanaians from the woes and bad governance that they are now experiencing."
According to him, Prof. Atta Mills was "the most marketed candidate among all prospective contestants for the NDC presidential slot and will easily win the popular votes by the electorate." He denied rumours that Prof. Atta Mills personally advised some of the aspirants to join the competition because he was no longer interested in the candidature.
Alhaji Aminu-Donkor encouraged all sympathizers of Prof. Atta-Mills to stand firm and be prepared to work hard to ensure that he won the flagbearer of the party.
He said he was aware that a team of experts were working on how the NDC could win back its support in the Central Region, however, the most important issue for them at the moment was how to get Pref. Atta Mills to win the nomination of the party and after that other issues would be taken care off.
In an answer to a question, the secretary of the Group, Mr Michael Quashie, gave the assurance that the Group would not break away from the NDC if Professor Atta-Mills failed to win the presidential candidature of the party but would support any person that the party would elect in the same way as they would support Prof. Atta-Mills.
