The Member of Parliament for Kpandai Constituency in the Northern Region, Matthew Nyindam says the Supreme Court judges were lenient in their three-day sentencing of National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team member Stephen Atubiga.
According to Mr. Nyindam, the NDC man's was lucky to be jailed only three days considering the potential impact of his unfortunate comments.
Atubiga who was contributing to a political discussion on Asempa FM said that Ghana cannot contain all of us if NPP wins the court case.
He contested the Binduri Constituency seat on the NDC’s ticket in the 2012 parliamentary election.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday sentenced Mr. Stephen Atubiga and Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight Newspaper, Kenneth Kuranchie to 3 and 10 days imprisonment respectively for contemptuous comments. Kenneth Kuranchie was found guilty of a front page comment published on the Thursday 27 June 2013 edition of his newspaper.
But speaking on Badwam on Adom TV Wednesday, Mr. Nyindam said Atubiga, should have been tried in a different court looking at the weight of his comments.
He said Atubiga is lucky to have escaped with that ruling. The MP’s comments received backing from his colleague for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akando who urged followers of political parties to exercise restraints in commenting on the ongoing election petition.
