Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP Vice-Presidential candidate, began a two-day tour of Tema, Friday with a visit to the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjetey Kraku II, and has pledged that the policies of the next NPP government will lead to a revamp of the Ghanaian economy to produce the needed jobs and prosperity for the people of Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia, who is set to tour the three constituencies in Tema - Tema East, Tema West and Tema Central – called on the Tema Mantse at his Palace to seek his blessings and prayers before commencing his activities.

“Our message to the people of Tema is simple and it is that Nana Akufo-Addo wants to really rebuild the economy of Ghana. SO far we have seen the economy going backwards. The fishing community is suffering, workers are suffering traders are suffering, the business community is suffering; that is the reality of what we have in Ghana today,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia underlined the importance of Tema to the Ghanaian economy and noted that the NPP has in mind several growth boosting policies that will greatly benefit the business community and workers and make life better.

“When Tema is suffering, it means Ghana is suffering because Tema is really the heartbeat of the Ghanaian economy. The Port is very key, the fishing activities, the industries, the businesses are very key to the Ghanaian economy and this is why we have some major things we want to do to make the Port for example a first class Port to really do globally competitive business. Our import duties are also too high, way too high,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia explained that there is a need to revamp the economy because the economy has stagnated under the NDC and this has led to massive unemployment and business decline.

“We want to build an economy which will produce jobs for our youth; a lot of the youths are finishing school today and they cannot find jobs because the economy is not growing – manufacturing is growing at minus 2% and agriculture is growing at 0% and so we really need to revamp the economy and this is our message to the people of Tema.”

“An NPP government will institute major policies that will revamp Tema. Tema may be the first major beneficiary of some of the policies because if you revamp the ports, you change the import duty structure and give incentives for people to hire the youth, Tema will feel it quicker than anywhere else and this is why we are here”, he stated.

Nii Adjetey Kraku II on his part thanked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for respecting the Tema Traditional Authority and for seeking its blessings before proceeding to Campaign and wished Dr. Bawumia and the NPP well.

Dr. Bawumia visited the Tema Mantse together with the three NPP Parliamentary Candidates in Tema, Hon. Titus Glover, MP and Candidate for Tema East, Hon. Kofi Brako, MP and Candidate for Tema Central and Carlos Ahenkorah, NPP Candidate for Tema West.
