Calls For Voter Register Audit: This is a fine opportunity for EC to raise trust level – Prof Naana Jane

The 2024 Running Mate of the National Democratic Congress, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has urged the Electoral Commission to heed her party’s call for a forensic audit of the voter register for the 2024 general election.

Speaking from her campaign office on Monday, September 16, 2024, Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang said the call by the NDC is a suitable opportunity for the EC to bolster public confidence ahead of the polls on December 7.

“This is a fine opportunity for the Electoral Commission to raise the level of trust. Just because they say so does not necessarily have to be so; they have to do things that everybody accepts and trusts, and that is what will lead to peace," she said.

She explained that the decision by the NDC to call for a public protest slated for Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in furtherance of the demand is justified and that the EC must heed the call and subject the register to an independent forensic audit.

“As of now, the way we all see things, the forensic audit is the way forward. Failing that, people also have the right to express themselves the way they want. Demonstrations are legal in this country, so, if you are not listening to them and you insist that it’s only your way that matters and people are going on demonstration, I salute everybody who wants to support the call by the party to join the demonstration.

“We are calling on the EC to do the right thing by responding to the call by the parties involved and the voters involved. This should work for all of us regardless of the party...,” she added.

According to the NDC, the demand for the forensic audit is to, among other things, fix some discrepancies it has identified in the current voter register.

However, the Electoral Commission has already justified its faith in the register and has shot down the NDC’s demand.

The opposition party, however, insists on embarking on what it describes as the “mother of all demonstrations” come Tuesday.
