Chief urges MP to fulfil campaign promises

Agona Swedru, May 4, GNA - The President of the Swedruman Council, Nana Kobina Botwe II, has called on the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai, to endeavour to fulfil his campaign promises made to the constituents in the 2004 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

He said by fulfilling those promises, the chiefs and the people in the area would have confidence in him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and also spur them on to support policies and programmes of the government.

Nana Botwe who is also the Acting President of the Nyakrom Traditional Council made the call when the MP for Agona West and Mr S. A. Mahama Wahab, Administrator of the Swedru Government Hospital, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace.

The visit also coincided with the weekly meeting of the Council at Swedru.

He said the chiefs in the area would like to see that the MP would appease the people with a solution to youth unemployment and other related issues to enable them to have hope in life Nana Botwe appealed to the MP to use his position to rehabilitate streets in Agona Swedru to ensure free movement of vehicles in the township.

He asked the MP to impress upon the Ministry of Trade and Industry to establish at least one or two factories at Swedru to absorb school leavers in the district.

Mr Obodai thanked the chiefs and the people for voting massively for President J A Kufuor and NPP in the December 2004 elections. He gave the assurance that the government would not be insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians, as some opposition parties were claiming, adding that the petroleum price hike was not intentional to unleash economic and social hardship on the people.

Mr Obodai said the government was working around the clock to ensure improved living standards for the people especially rural folks. He assured that the chiefs that he would do everything possible to fulfil his campaign promises so that people could offer another mandate to the NPP government in 2008.

The MP commended the chiefs for not dabbling in politics, but for exercising their civic responsibilities before, during and after the December 2004 elections.

He stated that he would ensure that the government allocated more Metro Mass buses to the Agona District to ply all routes in order to ease transportation problem facing the people. He said another traffic light would be installed at Agona Swedru to help solve traffic congestion in the town, adding that through his ingenuity the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has brought more transformers solve the power voltage problem in the area.
