Communities in Nankana East of the Upper East Region have expressed disappointment about the failure of the Government to give the area a district .
“By criteria and merits we are qualified and were promised that we will be given a district on our own and wondered why we should be denied it“ Mr. Christopher Asingya Naamsafae, an Assemblyman for Gunwako Electoral Area said at a press conference at the weekend.
He explained that the communities, which include Mirigu, Kandiga, Serigu, Mayoro, Nabango Natugnia and Yua, were in 1991 earmarked by the then Government for a district and just when it was about to inaugurate it, a confrontation ensued among some of the communities as to where the district capital should be cited leading to a disruption of its establishment.
Mr. Naamsafae said the communities, which are in one geographical area are now under the Kassena Nankana and Kassena Nankana East and West Districts, creating a lot inconvenience.
He said the area had all it takes to make it a district as indicated by the outcome of the recent Population and Housing Census.
He appealed to the NDC Government to grant the area a district which would encourage the residents to vote for the NDC party.**
