The Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has called out the Peace Council of Ghana over its call for the various political parties and individuals who would be contesting in the pending December 7, 2024, election to sign a peace pact.

In a post shared on Facebook on August 15, 2024, Cudjoe said that before asking stakeholders in the upcoming election to commit to peace, the Peace Council must first address some of the violence that was seen during the 2020 election.

He added that the council must call out people who are causing tension with comments they are making about the upcoming election before they can call for a peace pact.

“We have started this peace business again. I expected the Peace Council to call out the President and his government for doing nothing about the deliberate killing of seven innocent Ghanaians by the security forces in the last election. Not even an apology has been rendered, let alone punishment meted out to the culprits.

“Some political junkies have started stoking violence through intemperate speech. The Peace Council should reign in these delinquents before asking people to commit and sign peace pacts,” he wrote.

The IMANI president also indicated that the council must address the hardships Ghanaians are going through due to the failings of the government because there cannot be peace in the face of suffering and injustice.

“By the way, what has the Peace Council said about the capricious, deadly economic decisions that have killed some prematurely and pushed nearly a million people into deeper poverty? How can there be peace when your savings is literally pickpocketed? How can there be peace when the whole government and the EC precociously collude to ostracize the people of SALL?” he quizzed.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has stated that his party would not sign the peace declaration before the 2024 elections.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), in a statement issued by its General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, has made a passionate appeal to reconsider its decision in the interest of the country.
