Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Hon. Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, is urging the public to be wary of politicians who are making numerous promises in an attempt to win the mandate of the people to represent them in parliament.
He wants the citizenry not to allow themselves to be deceived by such promises. He also wants the citizenry to critically examine the promises made by politicians if they are achievable and by what means it could be achieved.
“We are pleading with our constituents that they shouldn’t allow us to be lying to them. If I am lying to the people of Asawase, they should be able to know because they should be able to know what I am capable of doing and what I am not capable of doing.”
There is a saying in Hausa which says that a lie that is sweet is better than the truth that is bitter but how can you accept that – that they should lie to you? The promise sounds so sweet in your ears, it sounds so interesting even if the person cannot do it,” he said in an interview on Radio Upper East, a state broadcaster, on Friday evening.
Hon. Muntaka, who is also the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, was addressing issues relating to the legislature. He was in the studios of the radio station together with the Minority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
The two and a host of other MPs are currently in the Upper West Region for an outreach program dubbed ‘Taking Parliament to the people’ which is being facilitated by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Parliament of Ghana.
After their engagement with the people on radio, they are expected to convene at the Town Hall in Nadowli/Kaleo for a public forum on Saturday afternoon. Same event will be held in Wa West on Sunday morning.
The forum, according to the Acting Director of Public of Affairs, Parliament of Ghana, is to afford the people of Upper West Region the opportunity to interact with their representatives in Parliament.
The program is the fourth in a series of events being organized by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Parliament of Ghana.
The group has for the past few months visited Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Central Regions.
