Dr. John Kpikpi, leader of the Progressive Alliance for Ghana, has condemned the outbreak of violence in parts of the country following the 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued on December 16, 2024, Dr. Kpikpi called for calm and urged all political leaders to take decisive action to rein in their supporters, warning that the post-election chaos threatens Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

The recent unrest, reportedly involving alleged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has seen state properties vandalized and clashes between protesters and security forces over parliamentary results.

Incidents of violence include the torching of Electoral Commission offices in the Eastern Region, injuries to security personnel attempting to restore order, and disruptions to collation processes in key constituencies like Dome-Kwabenya and Tema Central. Additionally, there have been reported attacks on NDC supporters by alleged NPP members.

Dr. Kpikpi lamented these developments, describing them as “deeply regrettable” and “unacceptable.”

He urged political leaders, including President-elect John Mahama and the leadership of both the NDC and NPP, to demonstrate statesmanship by prioritizing national unity over partisan interests.

“While political grievances may arise, they must be addressed through legal and peaceful means rather than violence. Ghana’s democracy has long been a beacon of hope across Africa, and these actions threaten to tarnish our global reputation," he said.

Dr. Kpikpi also called on the Ghana Police Service and military to act swiftly and decisively to safeguard lives, property, and democratic processes.

He further encouraged civil society organizations and religious leaders to continue advocating for calm and accountability across the political divide.
