EC should heed calls to clean voters roll – Rev Dr. Riverson

The Electoral Commission (EC) has been asked to heed calls to clean the voters roll ahead of the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

The Right Reverend Dr. E.H. Brew Riverson, a former Synod Clerk of the Methodist Church, says this is the right thing to do to assure the nation of a credible poll.

In an open letter to the body charged with the conduct of elections in the country, titled “Integrity of the Ghana Electoral Register,” a copy of which was made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi; he said the EC must make it possible to expunge the names of unqualified persons from the Register.

He noted that by doing this, the Commission would improve its own image and help the nation’s multi-party democracy to increasingly gain respectability and honour.

He underlined the need for the people to see the biometric registration exercise as an important innovation, and said anyone, who attempted to undermine and make it not workable, should be ashamed of themselves.

The Rt. Rev Dr. Riverson again called for political accommodation and urged political leaders to encourage their followers to respect their opponents, avoid insults and violence.

“Those who use insults and resort to violence, unfortunately, reveal the insecurity they have in their own hearts, and the fear they have for change.”

He appealed to all to remain faithful and to accept to do their jobs well wherever they were.

Getting their political party elected to power should not make anyone think that they are the only people who must have access to lucrative jobs, he added.

He counseled unity and urged Ghanaians to work together to develop the country.
