EC to subject nomination forms to rigorous scrutiny

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana Jean Mensa Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana Jean Mensa

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has assured presidential candidates who will be contesting the 2024 general elections that the filing process would be fair and transparent, noting that the EC will be fair and firm in executing its duties.

She gave the assurance when the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, filed his nomination forms at the Electoral Commission on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Jean Mensa said the filing process, which will last for five days, will be transparent, fair, and peaceful and will afford all the presidential candidates enough time to correct errors identified in their forms.

"Additionally, we are confident that the five-day period provided for the filing process as opposed to the 2-day process in 2020 will allow enough time for the presidential candidates to correct errors identified in the forms.

"We are confident that will eliminate the tension that characterised the 2020 election filing process prior to the 2020 elections," she stated.

She added that the nomination forms would be subjected to vetting and scrutiny by the team at the Electoral Commission.

"Our teams will go to work immediately on your forms and contact you within the shortest possible time to inform you of the decision arrived at," she said.

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, is also expected to file his nomination later in the day.
