The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing for a massive victory in tomorrow’s Fomena constituency parliamentary by-election. The party’s candidate, 49-year old Nana Abu Bonsra is well positioned to retain the seat last held by the late Akwasi Afrifa who was buried over the weekend.
Although the opposition NDC & the DPP are also contesting, their participation is expected to be an exercise aimed at strengthening the country’s democracy.
NDC officials ho have pitched camp in the constituency are however working hard and hoping to cause a major upset, though that is most unlikely. The NPP on the other hand is leaving nothing to chance, with almost all of its national executives and strategists taking the small Fomena constituency over, to ensure a comfortable win.
Speaking at a mini rally last week, National chairman Peter Mac Manu made a passionate appeal to the electorate to vote massively for the party’s candidate.
“We are here to appeal to you to vote massively for NPP to bring you development and progress'' and appealed to the electorate to also extend their goodwill to the party in the next general election.
The NDC candidate Grace Amporful will be hoping to improve on the total votes won by her predecessor John Toku who secured only 2,009 votes in the 2004 parliamentary election.
Fomena, a constituency in the NPP stronghold of Ashanti became vacant following the death of the former MP. The late Afrifa won 8,207 of the total votes cast, ahead of his closest challenger Independent Candidate George Kofi Tieku.
Mr. Tieku has been campaigning for the NPP candidate in tomorrow’s by-election, a factor that will propel the NPP to a comfortable win.
