Four women out of 24 parliamentary candidates in eight constituencies are contesting the 2024 general elections within Tema and its environs.
They are Ebi Bright for Tema Central, Dornukie Naa Norteye, and Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah for Ada, and Eunice Lasi, Sege.
Ebi Bright is leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the third consecutive time to try her luck to change the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) dominance in Tema Central.
Dornukie Naa Norteye, a new face representing the NPP, seeks to unseat Madam Ghansah, the incumbent who is contesting to retain her seat and be in Parliament for the fourth time.
Eunice Lasi, contesting the election as an independent candidate for Sege, decided to participate on her own after failing to snatch the seat from the NDC on her 2020 attempt on the ticket of the NPP.
The electorates of Tema East will, on Saturday, December 7, choose between two relatives, Yohane Amarh Ashitey of the NPP and the incumbent, Isaac Ashai Odamtten of the NDC.
The two candidates have all led the area as Metropolitan Chief Executives, with Yohane Amarh Ashitey still leading the Tema Metropolitan Assembly as the MCE while contesting to become a member of Parliament.
Tema Central, which is one of the constituencies in the Tema Metropolis, has three candidates: the NDC’s Ebi Bright, NPP’s Charles Forson, and independent candidate Frederick Aniagyei.
While the actress Ebi Bright believes this is her time to receive the nod from the electorates after failing to make it on two attempts, Charles Forson seeks to retain the seat for the NPP, replacing the current one-term MP, Yves Hanson-Nortey. Frederick Aniagyei, on the other hand, preaches against duopoly and calls for emancipation from political slavery.
Tema West is set to have a new MP on January 7, 2025, as the current MP, Kingsley Carlos Ahenkorah, after an eventful time in Parliament, is not seeking reelection.
The lot fell on Dennis Amfo-Sefah, a freight forwarder and former Tema West NPP Chairman, to carry the task of keeping the tradition of holding the seat for the NPP, which has enjoyed a monopoly in the area throughout the Fourth Republic.
His contender from the NDC, James Enu, a lawyer, is contesting for the seat for the second time, hoping his stars would shine this time and he would be given the nod to make history in the NPP-dominated constituency.
The Ashaiman constituency has four men contesting; the incumbent NDC candidate, Ernest Henry Norgbey, is looking forward to retaining the seat and representing the residents for the third consecutive time, expressing confidence that his works would see him through; Justice King Amevor Essiel, an educationist, has campaigned extensively to gain firm ground to get the NPP a seat in the stronghold of the NDC.
The other candidates are Emmanuel Felix Mantey, a university lecturer representing the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and Emmanuel Kofi-Yesu Heymann for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
Ningo-Prampram constituency would see Michael Tetteh Eku, a former constituency chairman, contesting on the ticket of the NPP, contesting against the incumbent NDC candidate Samuel Nartey George.
The constituency has two independent candidates, Frederick Forzie and Mr Evans Tetteh Nii Nartey, who are contesting.
The Ada constituency is set to have a female MP in the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, as two women, Ms Dornukie Naa Norteye and incumbent Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, are respectively locking horns for the NPP and the NDC.
The Sege constituency has three candidates: Dodzie Numekevor of the NPP, Daniel Keshi Bessey of the NDC, and Ms Eunice Lasi, an independent candidate contesting to replace the current MP, Mr Christian Otuteye, at Parliament.
At Kpone-Katamanso, the NPP’s William Ofosu Asante, PPP’s Samuel Kofi Agbane, and Mr Edmund Nii Amanquah Annang of the New Force are all working towards snatching the seat from the incumbent Mr Joseph Akuerteh Tettey of the NDC.
Electorates in the eight constituencies are ready to vote for their preferred candidates after months of being exposed to campaign messages and activities.
