Alan Kyeremanten, the presidential candidate of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC) otherwise known as the Afafranto Alliance has described the Free SHS Programme as fantastic, emphasising the need for a review to make it more effective.
Speaking at the Institute of Economic Affairs Evening Encounter on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, he said while the Free SHS Programme has improved access to senior high school education, it is essential to focus on other levels of education in the country.
"Free SHS is great. It is a fantastic programme. We will review it. All of a sudden Ghanaians have forgotten about basic education. if you understand what we are taking about. We must start to orient out children to critical thinking, our current orientation has to change", he noted.
The Free Senior High School Programme, introduced by the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2017 has ensured equitable access to senior high school education across the country.
It aligns with Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) states: “By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes".
