"Friends of Spio-Garbrah" donates $32,000 to Mills

Friends of Spio-Garbrah (U.K. & Ireland) have read with pride and joy the donation by one of their most prominent members, George Griffiths-Hagan, a London-based Ghanaian banker, of two pick-up vehicles worth $32,000 to the campaign of NDC flag bearer, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills. This follows a call by NDC former presidential aspirant Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah in January this year to all his erstwhile supporters to come forward publicly and assist the Mills-Mahama ticket on to victory in December.

Griffiths-Hagan’s action follows on Spio-Garbrah’s own January 2008 pledge and donated of $10,000 to the Mills-Mahama NDC team.

Friends of Spio-Garbrah’s in UK and Ireland note that George Griffiths-Hagan was a prominent member of the UK campaign team of Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, when he run unsuccessfully for the NDC flag bearership in December 2006. The generous donation by such a prominent member of the Friends of Spio-Garbrah is further testimony of the increasing unity within the leadership of the NDC as the Party continues to work hard to win the December elections under the banner of Professor Mills and John Mahama.

In a recent statement, Friends of Spio-Garbrah noted that, unlike the NPP, where a leading member, Alan Kyeremanten, resigned recently in anger over alleged marginalization of his supporters, Dr. Spio-Garbrah and his supporters continue to act with maturity in supporting the NDC and the campaign of Prof. Mills.

Friends of Spio-Garbrah wish to congratulate Mr Griffiths-Hagan on his generosity and would like to call on all who want Ghana to return to better governance, less corruption, more selfless leadership, a focus by the government on the needs of the poor and the disadvantaged rather than the greed of a few, to continue to mobilize massively to support the NDC, its flag bearer, the running mate John Mahama, and aspiring Parliamentary candidates to ensure that NDC enjoys a resounding victory in the December 2008 elections. The example by Mr Griffith-Hagen should inspire more Ghanaians in the diapora to go all out to make similar contributions, no matter how modest. George, Ayekoo. …

The public nature of the donations by both Griffiths-Hagan, Spio-Garbrah as well as by Alhaji Iddrissu Mahama among many other NDC supporters will also help remove the cloud of suspicion that often clouds political donations in Ghana and encourage more public disclosure of campaign financing.
