Even with barely two days for Ghanaians to go to the polls to select credible and decent leaders to lead the country, members of the New Patriotic Party have blatantly refused to heed to numerous calls from civil society groups and other political analysts to back down and totally refrain from the shameful politics of tribalism and insults.
Few days ago, Ms Ursula Owusu, a parliamentary aspirant and a member of the NPP shocked every decent minded Ghanaian when she openly reiterated the position of the NPP on non-Akans when she said if not for free education in the three Northern regions, all Northerners would have been cattle rearers.
This insulting and disgraceful attitude of the woman hopping to become a member of parliament has led to a northern youth group calling on the leadership of the NPP to immediately dismiss Ursula Owusu from the party and apologise to the good people of the North but the party and its leadership are mute on this challenge.
Yesterday, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 on Radio Gold newspaper review segment hosted by the regular host, Alhaji Alhassan Saibu Suhiyini a tape with the audible voice of Kofi Capito, a member of the NPP and close associate to Akufo-Addo was played and he was heard vehemently attacking Ga people and their chiefs in an embarrassing manner.
In that tape which was repeatedly played by the host of the programmed, the Akufo-Addo’s man domiciled all Gas and their chiefs together and described them as “useless people” compared to the Akans when comes to land management.
“You people are useless people; Ga people are useless and your chiefs are also useless. I say you are useless people. You are selling your land anyhow”, Kofi Capito told Prince Derek Adjei, a Ga and member of NDC repeatedly in a hot argument in Kumasi.
His denigration of the entire Ga State came after loud-mouth Minority Leader in Ghana’s parliament and NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, in the Ashanti region, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, slurred fellow Gas in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP); referring to them us people of low caliber.
In a typical tribal style, characteristic of him, the Minority leader, who spoke to Pravda Radio in Accra last Friday, 9th December 2011, confirming the Akan insatiable crave for supremacy and hegemony in the NPP he described the Gas as low thinking people who could not the running mate of the NPP.
Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, in response to a question asked by the host of the programme without mincing words, said there is no body among the Gas in the NPP who people will accept as a flagbearer. According to him, there was no high profile Ga yet, who can ascend to the position of flagbearer in the NPP, even though Professor Mike Oquaye have come close, but is disqualified obviously, as a result of his age. He Indicated how Northerners are regarded in the NPP, the Minority Leader with specific reference to former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, said he failed in his ambition to become flagbearer because, he was a complete outsider who was unknown within the circles of the party.
Mr. Mensah-Bonsu said, even though Alhaji Aliu Mahama served as Vice President for eight (8) years, he hit the rock in his own effort to become the flagbearer of the NPP, since his coming into the party was a very unpleasant spectacle to many a party faithful.
Still on Northerners, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu pointed out, that, for a Northerner to be considered as a flagbearer of the NPP, the candidate must prove himself or herself as a Vice President, else they stand no chance.
